Papua New Guinea

PNG Country Profile

Context

OCHA Papua New Guinea was established in early 2006 within the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator to assist the Resident Coordinator, humanitarian partners and the Government in times of emergency as well as to strengthen in-country preparedness capacities.

In June 2015, the OCHA Humanitarian Advisory Team office closed ending OCHA’s presence after nine years. Given Papua New Guinea’s high exposure to natural hazards, the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific continues to support the RCO and the Disaster Management Team in its preparedness activities and response to the ongoing El Niño-induced drought.
