CERF allocates $427,000 to DPRK in response to acute malnutrition

30 December 2011: The Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated US$427,131 to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the management of severe acute malnutrition in 25 vulnerable counties in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK).

CERF funds will be used to cover the supply needs for 3 months (January to March) for the management of acute malnutrition for severely acute malnourished children and other essential medicines. The rapid response grant will complement the funding already secured for DPRK through the CERF underfunded window in 2012 and ensure that UNICEF will be able to cover cases of acute malnutrition at the onset of 2012.

A food and nutrition assessment carried out by United Nations agencies in 2011 showed that 6,100,000 vulnerable people, including pregnant and lactating women, children under five years and children living in institutions, were particularly vulnerable to the foreseen interruption of food supply by the Public Distribution System, thus substantially increasing their risk of malnutrition and other diseases, particularly in food deficit counties.

In the coming months, it is expected that vulnerable children in the most food insecure Provinces will be at high risk of acute malnutrition and that moderate acute malnourished children might become severely malnourished if nutritional requirements are not immediately addressed.
