Mali is recovering from a violent political crisis and the food-security and nutrition crisis that gripped much of the Sahel in recent years. However, humanitarian needs remain high. The food situation is critical, and hundreds of thousands of children are at risk of acute malnutrition.
Despite these challenges, donor support for Mali has plateaued and funding for humanitarian action has been low. For example, the 2013 Consolidated Appeal for Mali has only received 50 per cent of required funding.
In January 2014, CERF allocated US$11.5 million from its Underfunded Emergencies window to help humanitarian partners sustain critical aid operations in Mali. This is the first time the country has received a CERF underfunded allocation since 2008. In 2013, CERF allocated $18 million to Mali through its rapid response window.
