Head of Office

Markus Werne, a Swedish and U.S. national, is currently serving as Head of UNOCHA’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Werne, has over 15 years of humanitarian response experience in the UN system, responding to humanitarian crises in Kosovo and Eritrea, and deployed in support of emergency operations to Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines and the Marshall Islands. He has also worked in UN Headquarters in New York.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Werne focused on improving regional preparedness in relation to large-scale disasters in Asia, as OCHA’s Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer in Bangkok and also previously served as Deputy Head of ROAP for several years.

Mr. Werne also has experience with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NGO sector. He holds a Master’s Degree in Peace and Conflict Research from Uppsala University in Sweden.
