OCHA in the Pacific

The Pacific is one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world. Small, vulnerable island states are isolated by vast expanses of ocean. They experience frequent and intense disasters with disproportionately high economic, social and environmental consequences.

In 1999, OCHA established a Regional Office for the Pacific (ROP) to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors.

OCHA ROP’s work in the Pacific is focused around the following key areas:

To improve the timeliness, effectiveness and predictability of humanitarian response in the region, OCHA ROP established the Pacific Humanitarian Team (PHT) in 2008. The PHT brings together humanitarian actors in the region to support Pacific Island governments in the coordination of humanitarian action using a regional cluster approach.

OCHA ROP supports 14 Pacific Island countries. OCHA also has an office in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, that reports to the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand.
