Referendum in Sudan: Confronting the Worst-Case Scenario

More than 110,000 people fled conflict in Sudan's Abyei region in May 2011, resulting in urgent, large-scale humanitarian needs in Warrap state. Following months of OCHA-led contingency planning by southern Sudan's Humanitarian Country Team, partners were poised to respond. In what has been widely considered an effective response, more than 100,000 displaced people and many host community members received life-saving assistance including food, shelter, water and sanitation, and health interventions.
