In Central Asia, Turkmenistan is one of the countries least vulnerable to natural disasters. However, due to its geographic and climatic features, the country is highly vulnerable to environmental damage, particularly regarding fragile, arid ecosystems and limited water resources. The country is situated in an earthquake-prone area, and plagues of the desert locust occur, on average, once every six years.
OCHA has engaged actively with Government and humanitarian actors operating in the country to strengthen the emergency response capacity. In 2012 ROCCA facilitated an inter-agency contingency planning process and related follow-up activities in order to better plan and coordinate disaster preparedness initiatives. The updated inter-agency contingency plan was approved by the stakeholders in August 2012.
