“Morocco is a disaster prone country, frequently experiencing droughts, floods, earthquakes, windstorms and landslides. These impact the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people and result in significant economic losses. Morocco is also a transit point and final destination for people in large mixed-migration movements, most of which originate from Sub-Saharan Africa.
In response, the Moroccan government has also been building its readiness to respond to disasters. In September 2013, the government announced a new policy towards migration, which includes a human rights-based approach and three new/updated pieces of legislation. International specialized agencies have offered to assist the authorities in formulating and rolling out the new policy. OCHA ROMENA has been supporting the UN Country Team in Morocco with contingency planning and training on international response architecture and coordination mechanisms.”
