Mauritius is considered to be an upper middle-income country. Despite its small size, regional variations in poverty exist in Mauritius, with incidence of relative poverty higher in urban areas (12.4%) than in rural areas (8%).The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index ranked Mauritius 45th (out of 148 countries) in 2013 - 2014, behind only South Africa in the Africa Region.
Since 2007, OCHA ROSA has supported various activities in Mauritius, including:
- A table-top simulation exercise on pandemic influenza in 2009;
- Discussions with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) on preparedness issues in 2010;
- Facilitating the organization of regional training on environmental emergency preparedness in 2013 (with participation of various NDMAs and environmental officers from countries in the region).
