The United Nations Security Management Team (SMT), comprises representatives of United Nations agencies, funds and programmes operating in Sudan. The SMT advises and reports on all security-related matters across Sudan and is responsible for the safety and security of UN personnel and premises in the country. The SMT is also responsible for preparing the UN System Security Plan for Sudan. The SMT also provides advice and support to non-UN international organizations that request it. The SMT system is implemented at both Federal and State level.

The "Saving Lives Together" Project. Linked to the SMT is the "Saving Lives Together" project.  This involves UN support in the provision of security services for INGOs in Darfur.  The project was initiated in 2006 as a result of a joint needs assessment carried out by UNDSS and OCHA.  It aims to enhance the coordination and collaboration between the security networks of the UN system and INGOs operating in Darfur; to establish procedures of timely information sharing; to systematically collect and analyse relevant security information; and to enable joint advocacy on security and safety related issues of common concern.  These tasks are performed by dedicated UNDSS Field Security Coordination Officers and INGO Liaison Officers in each of the Darfur States.
