Second International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria
The humanitarian situation in Syria and the condition for refugees in neighbouring countries continue to deteriorate. More than 9 million Syrians now need assistance, including 6.5 million people displaced inside their own country who are struggling to survive and cope with the crisis. More than 2.2 million more people have fled Syria since January 2012, seeking refuge in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.
The 2nd Pledging Conference, which took place in Kuwait City on 15 January, aimed to rally international financial support to meet the basic humanitarian needs of affected communities. The conference was chaired by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and hosted by the Emir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah. UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos, together with UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, addressed the conference calling on the international community for more support to help people affected by “the biggest humanitarian crisis we face today.”
In the Secretary-General's words, "I thank the Emir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, for generously hosting this Conference in Kuwait City for the second time. His Highness has again just demonstrated his outstanding commitment to this cause with a pledge of $500 million. I sincerely thank him for his exemplary leadership. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Government, people and non-governmental organizations of Kuwait for their enormous contributions in helping Syria and its neighbours to cope with the devastating effects of the conflict".
In January 2013, the 1st Pledging Conference for Syria saw 43 Member States pledge US$1.5 billion towards humanitarian efforts. Those funds were used to provide life-saving assistance for millions of people in Syria and surrounding countries, including emergency food rations, mobile medical care and vaccinations, clean water and sanitation, and basic shelter.
