ECOSOC: The future of humanitarian affairs (VIDEO)
The 2014 UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment opens today (23 June) at UN Headquarters in New York.
The three day annual meeting is a unique platform for Member States, UN agencies, humanitarian and development partners, the private sector and affected communities to discuss new and pressing humanitarian issues.
This meeting comes at a time when the global humanitarian system is at a crossroads. Over the past decade, the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has nearly doubled. In the same period, the cost of responding to these crises has more than tripled. A new approach is needed.
