Strengthening disaster management partnerships
ASG Catherine Bragg is in Quito, Ecuador this week, to attend the Fourth Regional Meeting on Enhancing International Humanitarian Partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbeanand to discuss global humanitarian issues and regional challenges with senior representatives of the Government of Ecuador.
Ecuador has extensive experience in disaster response and plays a key role in regional cooperation. The meeting will look at ways of strengthening collaboration between OCHA, the Government of Ecuador and other partners in disaster management, prevention and response. It will also provide a unique forum for humanitarian partners to share their information and experiences to help improve coordination in this particularly disaster-prone region.
In the last 12 months, many countries in the region have been severely hit by floods and landslides during the rainy season, compounded by the 'La Niña' phenomenon, especially affecting Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November, also represents a risk of disaster for many countries.
Ms Bragg’s mission confirms OCHA’s commitment to strengthening its partnerships with Member States and regional organizations in support of more effective humanitarian action at the national, regional and global level; and to promote OCHA’s mandate, humanitarian coordination tools and services in a region where emergency response and disaster preparedness are key.
