Côte d'Ivoire

Fast Facts

Côte d’Ivoire (CDI) has seen a gradual return to stability following its post-electoral crisis, which had a significant humanitarian impact on the country and region. However, the security situation remains fragile. Nearly 187,000 people are internally displaced and more than 180,000 are refugees in neighbouring countries, mainly Liberia and Ghana.

CDI faces immense challenges as it seeks to re-establish state authority and essential services throughout the country, lead reconciliation and social cohesion efforts, address persisting insecurity and re-build its homes and infrastructure.

In 2012, OCHA will provide coordination support to humanitarian partners working with the displaced and refugees who are expected to return home and re-establish their livelihoods over the coming months. If the economic and security conditions improve by 2013 and the country stabilizes, OCHA will focus on integrating humanitarian coordination with early recovery and development mechanisms. It will also handover its responsibilities to partner and Government counterparts.
