Chad
Fast Facts
Chad has experienced decades of internal violence compounded by insecurity from conflict and unrest in neighbouring Darfur and the Central African Republic (CAR). The humanitarian situation might improve over the next two years, but many communities remain vulnerable.
The Chadian population suffers from chronic high malnutrition rates and food insecurity, regular epidemic outbreaks, natural disasters (floods) and also received significant refugee and migrant flows following external crisis situations. The lack of basic services and the absence of rule of law in many parts of the country contribute to the vulnerabilities of large population groups. Ranked 183 out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index of the Human Development report, Chad remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
In 2012, OCHA will continue to support ongoing humanitarian relief and protection activities throughout Chad. A particular focus will be on helping the Government and mandated agencies to implement activities related to the protection strategy developed last year. OCHA will work closely with its partners to apply the strategy for durable solutions for internally displaced communities and, where feasible, support the transition to early recovery and development assistance.
