The humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the world’s most complex and long-standing. This is due to continuing armed conflict and general insecurity. The DRC Country Office is OCHA’s largest operation. Some 145 staff work against a backdrop of widespread poverty, chronic instability and continuous abuses against civilians by foreign and Congolese armed groups.
Access remains a key challenge in the region, and humanitarian actors have been increasingly targeted since 2008, often brutally. OCHA supports the HC and the humanitarian community to assist the Government in managing the country’s multiple emergencies.
The need for robust OCHA support is crucial in 2012 to ensure that targeted humanitarian protection and assistance strategies are developed and implemented; that the appropriate coordination, information and pooled-funding mechanisms are effectively managed; and that humanitarian action is dovetailed with stabilization, development and peacebuilding efforts.
