Niger
Fast Facts
Niger endured strict military rule for much of its post-independence history and is rated as one of the world’s least-developed nations. The drought-prone country has faced recurrent food crises over the past three decades. Political instability from the crisis in neighbouring Libya has deepened insecurity and continues to jeopardize humanitarian access.
OCHA established a presence in Niger in 2005 in response to a severe food crisis that affected some 3.6 million people, almost one third of the population. Since then, OCHA has played a central role in coordinating the response to the food security and nutrition situation.
With expectations of another poor harvest, OCHA will work with the Government in 2012 to strengthen national capacities on disaster preparedness, and to better plan and respond to a complex range of humanitarian challenges.
