Pakistan

Fast Facts

OCHA established an office in Pakistan in 2005 in response to a devastating earthquake in the country’s mountainous north. Since then, it has scaled back and then strengthened its presence to deal with floods in Sindh, an earthquake in Baluchistan and an internal conflict in the north-west that displaced over 3 million people.

The office was strengthened in 2010 to respond to unprecedented flooding and then again in 2011. Given the backdrop of regional instability, internal unrest and successive natural disasters in recent years, OCHA will work closely with its humanitarian and Government partners in 2012 to ensure an effective response in the event of future crises.

National disaster counterparts have requested OCHA’s support in developing contingency plans to this effect. Small field presences will remain in Sindh and Balochistan in support of the ongoing aid response, and to plan for an eventual transition to early recovery in these flood-affected regions.
