Kenya (covers Eastern Africa)

Fast Facts

In response to the growing drought and famine crisis in the Horn of Africa, OCHA streamlined its presence in Nairobi in 2011 into a single office for Eastern Africa.

The new hub plays a critical role in providing first-line surge support to crisis-affected countries where there is no OCHA presence, such as Burundi, Djibouti, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. It works closely with local authorities and partners to bolster national disaster preparedness in these countries and supports response. The office provides intensified support services to Kenya as one of the countries hardest hit by the drought, including through field locations in Dadaab, Marsabit and Lodwar.

OCHA will maintain its key roles in humanitarian financing, operational coordination, information management and advocacy. In 2012-13, it will re-assess the regional drought and famine conditions to determine whether its sub-national field presence in Kenya continues to be required.
