Regional Office for West and Central Africa (ROWCA)

Fast Facts

OCHA covers 25 countries in West and Central Africa, 17 of which are classified as Least Developed Countries by the UN. Food insecurity and malnutrition compound the impact of natural disasters, demographic change, poorly managed urbanization, epidemics and violent conflict stemming from political, social and economic tensions. Regional trends suggest that the humanitarian situation will not improve for millions of vulnerable people in this region in the coming years.

In 2012-13, OCHA will strengthen humanitarian coordination and emergency preparedness and response through its Regional Office for West and Central Africa (ROWCA — based in Dakar in Senegal), and its six Country Offices and three Humanitarian Support Units (HSUs). It will engage closely with Resident Coordinators (RCs) and Humanitarian Country Teams (HCTs), national and regional organizations and Member States to help mitigate the impact of natural disasters and other low- and sudden-onset emergencies.
