Since declaring the end of military operations against the LTTE in May 2009, the Government of Sri Lanka has made significant progress in returning IDPs to their home areas. In line with this, OCHA’s priorities in Sri Lanka continue to evolve and have seen a shift from humanitarian assistance into transition early recovery.
In 2012-13, OCHA will continue to support the Government and the humanitarian community to address residual humanitarian needs, especially in the Northern Province, and will provide effective bridging from relief to early recovery through its support to the RC/HC. Specifically the strategic focus will shift from IDPs resettlement and reintegration, into supporting the resettled population access basic services, protection and livelihoods.
Sri Lanka’s vulnerability predisposition to natural disasters means OCHA will continue to play a key role in supporting response preparedness and promoting disaster-risk reduction. It will work in close partnership with humanitarian and development partners and the Government.
