World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day 2014

World Humanitarian Day (19 August) celebrates the spirit of humanitarian work around the world. Each year, aid workers and its agencies selflessly support tens of millions of people whose lives have been torn apart by war or natural disasters.

August 19 marks the anniversary of the UN Headquarters bombing in Baghdad when 22 people lost their lives. In an effort to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance worldwide - and the people who risk their lives in order to provide it - the United Nations General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day in 2008. WHD recognizes the humanitarian personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in relieving the suffering of those inhumanitarian crises.

Six years later, World Humanitarian Day has become a global celebration of humanitarian action.
