Syria: COVID-19 update
The UN remains concerned about the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases across Syria.
To date, the Syrian Ministry of Health has announced 439 cases, including 138 recoveries and 21 deaths. Eight laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in north-west Syria. Additionally, six cases have been reported in the north-east, including one death.
While COVID-19 cases across Syria remain relatively low, the overall risk remains very high especially in areas where there are large displaced populations.
The World Health Organization is leading UN preparedness and mitigation measures across Syria, including in the north-west and in the north-east.
Yemen: Briefing to the Security Council
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock briefed the Security Council today on the SAFER oil tanker in Yemen.
Mr. Lowcock emphasized that the spill from the decaying oil tanker off the coast of Yemen could directly affect 1.6 million Yemenis – many of whom already depend on humanitarian aid.
