Markus Werne

Markus Werne was appointed OCHA's Head of Office in Sudan in May 2025. he has more than 28 years of experience in the field of humanitarian coordination and response. Prior to his current assignment, Werne led several OCHA offices including OCHA’s Country Office in Yemen, OCHA’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Thailand, and OCHA’s Country Offices in Türkiye and Pakistan. Werne has also led OCHA offices during emergency deployments including Ethiopia and the Regional Office for Southern and Eastern Africa. He also led OCHA’s response efforts following major natural disasters, notably the Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami, Indonesia, the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Nepal, and the Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. In recent years, Werne has assumed systemwide leadership roles in complex crises, including as Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, a.i., Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine and Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, a.i.. Werne has also managed a joint OCHA-WFP regional preparedness project aiming to improve system-wide response to large-scale disasters in Asia. Markus also worked with OCHA in Eritrea, Kosovo and at the Headquarters in New York. He holds a master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Research from Uppsala University in Sweden. Werne, a Swedish and US national, is fluent in English and Swedish.
