“Today is a critical moment in the history of Gaza. Today is the first day of the ceasefire. After 15 months of war and devastation. While we can see happiness in someone's face, we can also see that many of them are disappointed because it's the first time they are managed to go to see their house[s]. With all the destruction, and many of them have lost their loved ones during this war.”

“It is also a critical moment for us as humanitarian actors because for the first time since 15 months, we have been told that the supplies will be able to get in and that all the access restrictions that, we were facing for the last 15 months will be lifted.”

“There are big challenges ahead of us, roads will need to be cleared, shelters need to be set up and supplies need to flow in. We hope that this will all be possible in the coming weeks, as well as the returns of hundreds of thousands of people from the south to the north.”

Storyline
On the first day of the Gaza’s ceasefire implementation, OCHA Gaza’s Gloria Lazic said in the coming weeks “roads will need to be cleared, shelters need to be set up and supplies need to flow in.”
As residents started returning to the remains of their homes, many expressed relief and determination to rebuild.

Over 46,645 people were reportedly killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023, while 110,012 have reportedly been injured.
More than 160,000 housing units have been destroyed in Gaza, while OCHA estimates 1.9 million
People have been displaced.
