Storyline
One year after Storm Daniel devastated Derna and surrounding cities, claiming over 5,000 lives and displacing thousands, the city is beginning to rebuild.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon, said, "the local community has showed its resilience, its efforts to rebuild and reconstruct, together with the local authorities." Adding that “the UN has been steadfast and remains committed in supporting these efforts.”

On Sunday, 10 September 2023 storm Daniel made landfall in Libya causing severe weather conditions, including strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall affecting several northeastern areas of Libya.

Access challenges and conflicting reports from multiple sources further added to the difficulties in coordinating and effectively deploying humanitarian assistance.

Critical infrastructure, including healthcare, electricity, buildings, roads and telecommunication were significantly damaged.

We went through the war, we went through Daniel, and maybe, God forbid, something else might happen.”

20. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hamedi Belaid, Libyan Red Crescent Volunteer:
“I see that my experience was important on two fronts after the disaster. On the one hand, for myself. My continuation in humanitarian work after the disaster helped me overcome part of the trauma I experienced during the flood. On the other hand, it also benefited the community because if there was no response from people working in civil society or humanitarian work in general, the situation would have been an even bigger disaster. So, I see it as a distinctive or good experience for both parties, whether for myself or for the community.”
21. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hend Ali Al-Rashidi, Libyan Red Crescent Volunteer:
“We received many a good deal of assistance from the first hours, and most of the aid was humanitarian assistance from the United Nations, international organizations, and local organizations. Currently, after almost eleven months since the Daniel events, we have moved to recovery. What we see is that people are still deserving or in need of some assistance or we could say psychosocial support in the recovery phase.”
