Bangladesh: Chattogram Division Flash Flood and Monsoon Rain 2023 - Situation Report No. 01 (As of 13 August 2023)
This report is produced by the Inter-cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) in collaboration with cluster coordinators and humanitarian partners members of the Humanitarian Task Team (HCTT). HIGHLIGHTS
● Severe damages have been inflicted upon the Chattogram Division (Chittangon), specifically in the districts of Chattogram, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, and Rangamati, due to heavy rainfall and water flowing down from the hills.
● The UNOSAT FloodAI Monitoring Dashboard (UNOSAT S-1 FloodAI Monitoring Dashboard - BGD (cern.ch) has reported a total exposed population of 2.4 million in four severely affected districts Chittagong, Bandarban,
Ragamati and Cox’s Bazar, between 5 to 10 August 2023.
● In Chattogram, the satellite data reveals that within an analysed area of approximately 4,918.09 square kilometres, around 327.59 square kilometres of land have been inundated by surface waters. Of this area, approximately 265.23 square kilometres of cropland are likely to have been affected by the flooding.
● Considering population data from Worldpop and the extent of detected surface water, it is estimated that around 346,196 individuals are potentially at risk or reside in close proximity to the flooded areas in Chattogram.
● Humanitarian organizations have reported that a staggering 90 percent of the Bandarban district has been submerged in water.
● The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector has been severely impacted, particularly in the districts of Bandarban, Rangamati, and Chittagong.
