Burkina Faso, Mali and Western Niger - Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 16 October 2024)
Despite a continued decrease in reported security incidents, the populations of the Central Sahel continue to be affected by violence, conflict and insecurity, resulting in 1,946 deaths in August and September 2024, compared to 2,864 people killed in May and June 2024. The 569 security incidents recorded in August and September bring the total number for the year to 10,599. There are currently 2.7 million internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, an increase of 3 per cent compared to June 2024. Meanwhile the number of refugees in the three countries has fallen 2 per cent, to a total of 319,500.
Displaced and vulnerable people in the Central Sahel face severe food insecurity and malnutrition and have limited access to basic services. During the 2024 rainy season, many have also been affected by severe flooding across these three countries. There are 8,218 schools that are not functioning, and 494 health centres that are not operational, with Burkina Faso the most affected country.
Despite persistent violence, access challenges and funding constraints, 310 humanitarian organisations are providing aid to affected populations in the region. To date, US$885 million has been received, representing 38 per cent of the funding needed to support 9 million people.
