Despite a 50 per cent drop in reported security incidents, the populations of the Central Sahel continue to be affected by violence, conflict and insecurity, resulting in 2,864 deaths between May and June 2024, compared to 3,393 people killed between February and April 2024. More than 2.6 million people are internally displaced and 326,900 are refugees in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, an increase of 15 per cent compared to the previous period.

Displaced and vulnerable people in the Central Sahel face severe food insecurity and malnutrition and have limited access to basic services. There are 8,065 schools that are not functioning, and 556 health centres that are not operational, with Burkina Faso being the most affected country. Despite persistent violence, access challenges and funding constraints, 252 humanitarian organisations are providing aid to affected populations in the region. To date, US$580 million has been received, representing 25 per cent of the funding needed to support 9 million people.
