Lake Chad Basin - Humanitarian Snapshot (As of 3 March 2025)
In the Lake Chad Basin, the complex and multifaceted cross-border crisis is compounded by a number of factors that exacerbate the volatile situation in the region.
As of 30 December 2024, there were 3.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region, including 2.3 million in Nigeria, representing an 8 per cent increase since 2023. Meanwhile, the number of refugees in the region rose by 4 per cent, compared to 2023. The number of security incidents (2,197) increased by 23 per cent, with Cameroon and Nigeria being the countries with more security incidents reported. Due to the ongoing conflict, 4,632 schools remained non-operational in 2024.
Vulnerable populations in the region continue to face severe food insecurity and malnutrition, with 4.9 million people projected to be severely food insecure (IPC phase 3+) in 2024, compared to 4 million in 2023. In 2024, while 10.2 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.2 million were targeted, and 4.7 million were reached thanks to $1.7 billion in funding from donors, representing 55 per cent of the required funding as of 3 March 2025.
