Maroua, 22 November 2024: The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Cameroon, Mr. Issa Sanogo, accompanied by some members of the Cameroon Humanitarian Country Team, concluded his visit to the Far North region on 22 November 2024.

Mr. Sanogo met and thanked government authorities for their warm welcome, action and support. He also met United Nations, national and international actors, as well as traditional leaders and people affected by crises. He visited Maga and the internally displaced site of Palia-Pouss, where people affected by severe flooding are hosted, the refugee camp of Minawao and Zamay internally displaced site, home to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the Lake Chad basin conflict, including host communities.

While the humanitarian response is significantly underfunded and despite challenges, humanitarian partners and the United Nations are making remarkable efforts to respond to the populations affected by conflict and climate crises in support and complement of government authorities’ efforts in the Far North. However, the needs remain significant, Mr. Sanogo said today, at the end of his five-day visit.

“I would like to pay tribute to the synergies I have observed between regional, local authorities, humanitarian actors, United Nations agencies and local and international NGOs. While pursuing our vital mission of responding to emergencies, it is crucial to be able to reflect with all stakeholders on more sustainable solutions for displaced, refugees and host communities, as well as climate impact prevention and mitigation measures”, Mr. Sanogo said. “This mission will therefore not come to an end today, as we will continue to reflect and work all together at the service of Cameroon people.

The crises affecting the people of the Far North region have left 1.2 million people in need of humanitarian aid. These include vulnerable people displaced within the country, Nigerian refugees who have been generously received by Cameroon, and host communities.
