Between 1st January and 30 June 2025, 25¹ inter- and intra-community conflicts were reported in Chad. This figure represents a 10.7% decrease compared to the second half of 2024 (28 incidents) and a 3.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2024 (26 incidents). However, these
conflicts in the first half of 2025 resulted in a higher number of casualties than each of the two previous semesters.136 deaths and 166 injuries have been registered, compared to 71 deaths and 61 injuries in the second half of 2024, and 111 deaths and 88 injuries in the first half of the same year.
Most of the victims recorded during this period were children and women.
Recorded conflicts during the period under review shows that 52% were inter-community in nature, 24% were the result of tensions between herders and farmers, and 24% were land related. Furthermore, 60% of conflicts (15 incidents) were reported in the southern provinces. The Lac province alone
recorded 28% of conflicts (7 incidents) thus being the province with the highest number of reported cases.
12,500 people were displaced as a consequence of conflicts in the provinces of Logone Occidental and Mayo-Kebbi Ouest in May and June 2025.
Access to polders and natural resources, challenges linked to land tenure and cohabitation between herders and farmers are the most causes of conflicts. Most of the time, communities resort to violent acts of reprisal to resolve their differences, instead of using conventional means of conflict
prevention and resolution.
