Main Points

  • An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred 20km north of Port-de-Paix (North West) Saturday, 6 October at 8:10pm local time (New York time). It was felt across the majority of the departments of Haiti and Port-auPrince (West department) and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). 2 replicas occurred. No tsunami alert regarding the seism was launched by the DPC.

  • According to DPC initial damages assessment, Gros Morne in the Artibonite department, Port-de-Paix in the North-West department, Chansolme in the North-West department, Plaisance in the North departement and Tortuga Island in the North departement are affected.

Situation Overview

People affected

The DPC confirmed several people wounded in the North-West department. The secretary of State for Communication, Mr. Eddy Jackson Alexis has confirmed in the night of 06 October first reports of 11 people dead, 7 in the North-West department notably in the Port-de-Paix town and 4 in the commune of Gros Morne in the Artibonite department.

Damages

Damages were reported in Port-de-Paix (North-West), Gros-Morne (Artibonite), Chansolme (North-West), Plaisance (North) and Tortuga Island (North-West) with houses and public infrastructures destroyed or damaged. Wounded people are currently welcomed in the North department hospitals.
