IMPACT: Haiti is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, driven by escalating violence and the collapse of essential services. Armed groups have tightened control over the capital and beyond, overwhelming shelters as 11 per cent of the population is internally displaced. Hunger is rising, placing Haiti among the world’s top five hunger hotspots. Health systems are near collapse, with hospitals under attack and disease spreading in overcrowded camps. Schools have been destroyed or turned into shelters, while protection risks grow, with widespread gender-based violence and armed groups targeting children. Haiti ranks among the five countries with the highest number of child victims of sexual violence. Ongoing deportations to Haiti further strain overstretched services, as well.

RESPONSE: Humanitarian operations are facing significant challenges due to severe funding shortfalls and insecurity. Halfway through the year, the Haiti Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan is the least funded humanitarian appeal worldwide. The funding gap is affecting hurricane season preparedness as well, with supplies falling far short of the levels needed to respond effectively in the event of a major storm. Partners face violence-related access restrictions that disrupt the delivery of food, water, shelter, and health services, with some suspending or relocating certain operations.
