Key Highlights

● On 27 January, IOM DTM and INGD released the results of recent Initial Rapid Assessments of Cyclone Dikeledi and revised the number of people affected upwards to 283,334 people (80,780 households).
Among the affected there are 142,598 children (50 per cent), 74 778 women (27 per cent), and 65,958 men (23 per cent) and 45,333 people with disabilities.

● The most severe impact is in the districts of Mossuril (62,003 people) followed by Ilha de Mozambique (58,610 people), Monapo (44,287 people), Nacala Porto (25,394 people), Angoche (23,991 people) and Liupo (19,793 people).

● As of 22 January, all four accommodation centres that hosted 1,503 people since 14 January, were closed to pave way for re-opening of schools scheduled for end of January.

● INGD and OCHA facilitated the Multisector Initial Rapid Assessment (MIRA) from 25-29 January in Nacala Porto, Ilha de Mozambique, and Monapo districts and identified Shelter/NFI, emergency food,
WASH, and health as priority needs of the affected people.

● Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi is the second cyclone to hit Mozambique in a month. The combined number of people affected by cyclones Chido and Dikeledi in Nampula province is 389,334 individuals.

Situation Overview

Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi made landfall south of Ilha de Mocambique in Nampula province in the early afternoon of 13 January and re-entered the Mozambique Channel via Angoche the next day. It brought severe weather conditions with Mossuril recording the highest precipitation with 247mm on 14 January followed by Muecate (240.1mm) and Nampula (210.4mm), and windspeeds of 150km/h, and intense wind gusts of up to 180 km/h.
Following the Initial Rapid Assessments by IOM DTM and INGD, the number of people affected by Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi has increased by 11.8 per cent from 249,787 individuals as of 17 January to 283,334 individuals as of 27 January. The total number of damaged houses is estimated at 80,865 houses including 44,012 partially damaged and 36,853 fully damaged houses, as well as 48 health facilities, 221 schools, 168 places of workshop, and 4,092 Ha of agricultural area.

Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi is the second cyclone to make landfall in Mozambique with Tropical Cyclone Chido making landfall in Cabo Delgado on 15 December 2024. In Nampula province, Cyclone Chido affected 106,000 individuals mainly in Erati and Memba districts as reported by INGD. The combined impact of Tropical cyclones Chido and Dikeledi in Nampula province are widespread and severe with a total number of 389,334 individuals affected, while it is still the start of the 2025 cyclone season that is expected to end in April. INAM forecasts more cyclones in the coming months.

As of 22 January, 37 cases of diarrhea were reported in 14 districts according to provincial health authorities. Mogincual is at a 100% risk of cholera followed by Angoche (40 per cent) and Moma (38 per cent).
