Lake Chad Basin: Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 30 December 2024)
In the Lake Chad Basin, the complex and multifaceted cross-border crisis is compounded by a number of interconnected crisis factors that exacerbate the volatile situation in the region. As of 30 December, there were a total of 2.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region, including 2.3 million in Nigeria. This represents a decrease of 1 per cent since September. Despite the continued decline in reported security incidents, the population of the Lake Chad Basin continues to be affected by violence, conflict and insecurity, resulting in 77 deaths in October-December 2024, compared to 320 in August and September 2024. The 21 security incidents recorded in October-December bring the total for the year to 1,350.
Vulnerable populations in the region continue to face severe food insecurity and malnutrition, while access to basic services has deteriorated since the last reporting period.
