Eastern Africa: Regional Cash and Voucher Assistance Overview (Jan - Dec 2024)
In 2024, humanitarian needs in Eastern Africa remained critical due to conflicts, economic shocks, climatic hazards and displacement. Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) enabled affected people to meet their basic needs with dignity and flexibility.
About $437 million was disbursed through CVA interventions across nine Eastern African countries. Somalia accounted for the highest share, receiving $262.3 million, followed by Sudan ($50.8 million) and Uganda ($35.9 million). Tanzania recorded the lowest CVA disbursement at about $133,550.
CVA interventions reached millions of people across the region and improved food security, enabled access to essential services such as healthcare and education and boosted local economies. However, challenges such as access restrictions, financial service disruptions and liquidity constraints persisted in several countries.
