HIGHLIGhTS
- Nearly 5 million people have reportedly been impacted by drought with severe water shortages, crop failure and school closures reported. Concerted efforts and adequate resources are urgently needed to address the crisis.
- New data shows that up to 6.5 million Somalis are projected face acute hunger in March mainly due to escalating drought conditions; over 1.8 million children are at risk of malnutrition.
- In 2025, the Somalia Humanitarian Fund allocated USS$61 million to support vulnerable communities. This was complemented by an additional $24.9 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund.
- Authorities, communities, diaspora and the private sector have stepped up to provide cash, water and food assistance to drought-affected Somalis demonstrating resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.
- Critical funding shortages are hampering drought response, leaving many people without essential support. As of 5 March, the hyper-prioritised 2026 humanitarian needs and response plan is only 10.9 per cent funded.
