Somalia: 2025 Drought Emergency - Situation Report No. 2 (As of 21 December 2025)
Highlights
- The drought emergency in Somalia has significantly deepened, with authorities estimating that 4.61 million people have been affected by prolonged dry conditions across the country.
- Partners report that at least 120,000 people have been displaced from their homes between September and December.
- Some examples are at least 170 boreholes and shallow wells becoming non-functional including 71 in Galgaduud and Mudug regions, and 66 in Bari and Nugaal. At least 75,000 students have been forced to drop out of schools countrywide.
- The emergency follows the poor performance of both the April–June and the October–December rains, and is compounded by funding shortfalls for humanitarian assistance.
- The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator has allocated US$10 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for drought early action, targeting over 603,000 people.
