Statement by the Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia Mr. George Conway

(Mogadishu, 28 March 2026)Tensions and recent clashes in South West State have displaced an estimated 45,000 people, forcing families to flee to areas with limited access to basic services and humanitarian assistance.

I am concerned that those affected include the most vulnerable people-30 per cent of whom were already living in displacement sites-who were already struggling to cope with the compounded impacts of severe drought.

In particular, the newly displaced women, children, older persons, and people with disabilities now face heightened protection risks and worsening humanitarian conditions on the outskirts of Baidoa town.

I urge all parties to uphold their obligations to protect civilians, ensure the unhindered movement of people, and guarantee safe, sustained, and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need.

I call for immediate de-escalation and avoiding any further activities that could lead to violent conflict. Without urgent action, the humanitarian situation in Baidoa town, which already hosts about 430,000 internally displaced people, will deteriorate further.

All parties must act now to reduce tensions and create the conditions necessary for displaced families to return safely and with dignity to their homes.

Humanitarian partners are remaining on the ground and are committed to delivering assistance to those in need.
