KEY MESSAGES

  • The flooding in Renk has worsened an existing situation for people and significantly limited physical access to key areas, including to the airport, Zero (an informal settlement), Paloich, Melut and beyond. Additional resources are needed to deal with the multiple consequences of flooding, including to prevent disease outbreaks.

  • Released on 4 September, the updated Emergency Response Plan for the Sudan Crisis requires US$356 million from May to December 2023 to address people’s critical priorities, including onward transport assistance (OTA) to preferred final destinations, life-saving humanitarian assistance on arrival and during transit, targeting 600,000 individuals.

  • WFP requires $139.4 million to provide life-saving food and nutrition assistance for new arrivals and support the humanitarian response through UNHAS and the Logistics Cluster to the end of the year.

  • On 3 September, the general onward transportation from Joda to Renk town was paused due to temporary funding constraints. Between 3 and 10 September, only one minibus specifically dedicated to vulnerable individuals and one vehicle for medical referrals and transportation for those in urgent need of care are available. During this period, UNHCR has extended transportation support between Joda and Renk to new arrivals at the border. In two days, almost 900 individuals were moved to the transit centre (TC).

SITUATION OVERVIEW

  • The influx of people fleeing the conflict in Sudan continues (as of 8 September, 259,451 individuals were registered since April), with more people expected to arrive as the fighting continues. Joda/Renk border remains the main point of entry (PoE) for about 97 per cent of new arrivals, including returnees, refugees and asylum-seekers.

  • Between 31 August and 3 September, 1,451 refugees and returnees arrived from Renk to the Malakal TC by boat after traveling for two or three days and 1,464 departed Malakal by air to various locations in other states.

  • As of 3 September, all OTA to or from Renk, Malakal and other locations is on pause. Following this temporary pause in movements out of Renk, OTA from Renk to Malakal and beyond will recommence at a modified pace from 11 September. The modalities will be communicated to partners and returnees in the field to ensure smooth and effective coordination for onward transportation.

  • During the reporting period, 235,000 people out of 254,044 new arrivals as of 4 September received hot meals, highenergy biscuits, dry rations and cash-based transfers from WFP. About 49 per cent of the new arrivals are women and girls, 46 per cent are below the age of 18 and 4 per cent are over the age of 60.
