On 7 February, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees will jointly launch the Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan and Regional Refugee Response Plan for Sudan for 2024.

Ten months of conflict have come at an intolerably high price for the Sudanese people. More than 13,000 people have reportedly been killed and some 25 million people – 14 million of them children – urgently need humanitarian assistance. This includes nearly 18 million people who face acute hunger. More than 6 million people have been internally displaced, sometimes several times over, since the fighting broke out in April.

The war has also forced over 1.5 million people to flee abroad to countries that were already hosting large refugee populations with overstretched resources. This includes refugees and people compelled to return to their home countries prematurely. Most of them are arriving in remote locations that lack essential services. Support for the humanitarian response is crucial, but investments to strengthen national services and boost community resilience are equally critical for enabling people to live with dignity.

The UN-coordinated Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan aims to reach nearly 15 million people inside the country this year.

The Regional Refugee Response Plan aims to reach nearly 2.7 million people in five countries neighbouring Sudan with lifesaving and resilience-building interventions.

The event in the Palais des Nations in Geneva is open to UN-accredited press. It will feature a presentation of the plans by Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
