Vanuatu: Tropical Cyclone Judy and Tropical Cyclone Kevin: Situation Report No. 6 (As of 5 April 2023)
This report is produced by the OCHA Office of the Pacific Islands in collaboration with humanitarian partners under the Pacific Humanitarian Team. It covers the period from 30 March to 05 April 2023. This is the last sitrep in this series.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Tropical cyclones JUDY and KEVIN (both of Cat 4 intensity) made landfall over Vanuatu on the 1st and 3rd March, affecting over 251,000 people.
• 27 evacuation centers are active in Efate (Shefa province). 868 people (157 households) are staying in evacuation centers, while 812 people are with host families.
• A second shipment of 1,050 Dignity kits, 1,000 menstrual hygiene supplies, 100 women with disability dignity kits, and supplies for the Women and Girls' friendly spaces, left Fiji on 04 April 2023.
• The coordination of the “First Push” of dry ration is ongoing around Port Vila and Tafea province.
• Water trucking and quick fixing in Tafea and Shefa is ongoing.
• An estimated 99.8% of electrical services have been restored in the country.
• Assessments are ongoing to identify healthcare facilities requiring infrastructural repairs.
• Although all schools in the six provinces have been instructed to re-open, a total of 299 school buildings including classrooms have been damaged in Tafea Province.
• As recorded in the NDMO 3W live dashboard, cluster partners have collectively distributed over 158,230 reliefs items to affected people.
• The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) has issued an El Niño Watch, advising residents to collect and save rainwater, and continue to plant drought-resistant crops.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
Following the two category 4 tropical cyclones (JUDY and KEVIN) which hit Vanuatu on the 1 and 3 March, a State of Emergency was declared by national authorities on the entire country on the 5 th of March. 251,000 people have been affected by the two cyclones. Updated reports (03rd April) from the Evacuation Centers Cluster signal that there are still 27 active Evacuation Centers in Efate, Shefa province. Currently, 868 people (157 households) are staying in evacuation centers, while 812 individuals are living with host families.
The Shelter Cluster distributed emergency shelter kits to 380 households around Port Vila. 210 NFIs have been distributed by CARE to South Erromango, Futuna and Anietyum; 29 have been distributed by VRC in Southeast Tanna, and 237 by NDMO to Southern Ward, Anamburu and Central Ward. Over 4,000 affected HH have been reached with Emergency Shelter distributions in Shefa (2960 HH) and Tafea (1156 HH) Provinces. Over 100 households have been reached in Malampa and Sanma provinces.
