UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator

Mr. Al-Za’tari was appointed UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for the Syrian Arab Republic in October 2016.
Before this appointment, Mr. Al-Za’tari was Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as well as RC/HC/RR (2015-2016). He was RC/HC/RR in Sudan from 2012 to 2015.
Mr. Al-Za’tari served at UNDP Headquarters as Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director of the Bureau of Management from 2007-2012. From 2004-2007 he was UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Syria. Prior to this (2001-2003), he served as Senior Policy Adviser in the Directorate, in the Regional Bureau for Arab States in New York and from 1999-2001 as Regional Policy Specialist, attached to the same regional bureau.
For four years, Mr. Al-Za’tari was Deputy Resident Representative for UNDP Libya (1995-1999). He served as Assistant Resident Representative and Officer-in-Charge for UNDP Iraq from 1992-1995 and as Programme Officer and Assistant Resident Representative in UNDP’s Sudan office from 1989-1991. Mr. Al-Za’tari began his UNDP career as a local Programme Assistant, (subsequently Officer-in-Charge) for UNDP in Kuwait in 1980.
Mr. Al-Za’tari holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts (Major in Political Science) from Western Maryland College, USA, and a MSSC in Social Sciences, from Syracuse University, New York. He speaks Arabic and English.
